I am very excited to announce that we will begin carrying a new product line of koi fish food with color-enhancing ingredients! This product is a 35% premium protein with spirulina and other ingredients that will benefit your koi year round! Look for new listings around August 29th.
I knew the fish would be really hungry after the rain finally stopped! They just can't get enough! Temps rising into the mid 90s again!
I can't say that I remember a time when it rained steady for a week in August! I'm very thankful that we didn't get the flooding that our Louisiana friends have been experiencing, and I hope and pray for the safety and well-being of everyone that has been hit with this summertime disaster.
Although it may feel like spring in August, I'm sure there will be plenty of more dog days of summer with temperatures going back up to 100 degrees soon! Don't forget to feed the fish! Although they may not consume as much during heavy rains, they will be starving once the weather patterns settle back to normal. Continue feeding your spring/summer diet until your water temperature drops to about 65 F. We will begin carrying our fall/winter diet (Kenny's Chillin' Chow) about mid-September.
Have a great rest of the summer!
Yes, the time has definitely come! The fish are presenting themselves and letting us know they are lovin' this warm weather and wanting to eat. I am still feeding 28% protein to the big ones, but moved up to 36% protein for the little ones. I usually feed floating/sinking crumbles to the babies, but decided to give them a treat today and fed them Kenny's Vanishing Vittles small "mini" floating/sinking pellets - mainly because it is so windy and they won't fly in the wind like the crumbles do. OMG! I couldn't feed it to them fast enough! They just kept cleaning it up like there is no tomorrow! Not only did the big catfish, carp, and bream enjoy their large floating pellets, but the geese and turtles got a treat too! I'll move up to 32% protein in about a week. Yes, I do get a kick out of feeding the wildlife. I filled my bird feeders, and saw the first humming bird today, so I filled those feeders to. I leave vegetable and fruit scraps for the deer and squirrels. Wish I had more time to enjoy this more. As a home builder, my own home time is limited. I guess that makes it even more special! Enjoy feeding your koi - or whatever you happen to be feeding!
We have experienced warm temperatures but heavy rains here in Arkansas since Tuesday, March 8th. It is our experience with both earthen and man-made ponds that the fish don't eat as well during these conditions. We will have sunny and 80+ temperatures for the next couple of days so I'm expecting them to come out of hiding! But, the weatherman tells me that winter temperatures will be returning by the end of the week! Remember, the weather fluctuations will affect the fish's appetite so if they eat one day and not the next, don't fret. If your pond is healthy, nature will tell them when it is time for the feeding frenzy!
It has been in the low 70's for a few days in a row, and my fish babies are hungry! I feed my small pond fish crumbles with 28% protein until it has been consistently warm for at least 2 weeks. Then I switch to 36% protein. I will get a new batch of 36% protein in tomorrow 3/7/16. Feeding these crumbles to the fry and fingerlings spring and summer will add the growth they need to winter over next fall. These fish in the photo were only about 3" long last summer! They are still eating the crumbles, but some of them are now taking the medium sized pellets! We don't recommend feeding crumbles to outdoor ponds with filter systems, as this fish food contains fry meal, which can be detrimental to your system. It can be strained, if preferred. Crumbles will also contain some large pellets, which can be crushed for smaller fish. We are expecting 8" of rain over the next few days, so feeding will slow down during that time.
Kenny always makes the biggest splash in the pond!
